The process of raku is unique.  The pots are fired in a kiln outside with a gas flame until red hot.  Then, removed and put in a nest of sawdust, pine straw, twigs, newspapers, or other flammable material which catches on fire immediately.  they are covered with a bucket where they will smoke.  The black on these pots are the actual smoke from the fire!  The risk factor while firing is greater, but the beauty of these pots makes it worth the chance of breakage.

Pati's sgrafitto pots are hand thrown or extruded clay that are brushed with underglazes while leather hard, then, the images are carved to let the clay show through.  Some of her designs are "Shell Pots", "Moon Pots", "Wildlife Pots", "Sealife Pots", and "Lowcountry Life Pots".  The shapes vary from bowls to candlesticks.
